Soy wax candles are more expensive, so of course you will want to make them last as long as possible.
Wise Oak candles are natural, phthalate free, nontoxic aromatherapy candles made from premium soy wax and cotton paper core wicks. The candles are long lasting and fragranced with pure, high quality, potent essential oils. Our candles burn clean without soot or smoke. |
At the very least, always:
- Keep wick trimmed to 1/4″
- Burn for at least two hours at a time but no more than four
- Keep lid on candle when not in use to extend the life of the scent
- Always allow candle wax to melt to the edges to ensure longer candle life and prevent wax tunneling
- Extinguish candle with a candle extinguisher to avoid possible splatter and injury
- Never leave candle unattended
- Keep away from children and pets.
Candles add a certain ambiance to a room, especially in the colder, darker months. The glow from the flame, the scent from the wax, the calming effect of a wood wick, and even the color or features of the jar can add a romantic or calming feel to a room.
Our candles are hand crafted using nontoxic wax blends and wicks, ensuring that you are breathing in fresher indoor air. As I have mentioned many times, paraffin candles contain toxins that diminish the air quality in your home. Soy wax and beeswax, however help tto cleanse your indoor air and are non-toxic.
However, caring for them is a bit different than caring for paraffin wax candles, especially those made with essential oils.
Soy wax candles are more expensive, so of course you will want to make them last as long as possible. At a bare minimum, follow the care instructions above, but what do you do when you come across something not mentioned above?

Below, I have outlined some common things you may experience with candles of any type:
- Candle wax does not melt fully across the top and is tunneling!
Candle wax has a memory. This is why it is very important to burn a candles long enough to melt it from edge to edge. Otherwise, the next time you burn your candles it will only melt where it melted the last time, eventually leading to tunneling.
Although failure to burn across can be due to using the incorrect wick size (too small), this is usually due to not burning the candle long enough. Be sure to burn at least two hours each time. - My candle will not burn all the way across and is still hard on one side.
This happens when the wick is not centered properly and the pool is not burning from the center out to the edges. At times, it can occur even with a perfectly centered wick. Environmental factors such as air drafts and sitting the candle in a cool window sill where the window is cooler than the indoor air can cause uneven burn.
The good news is, you can safely and effectively remedy this ugly situation and prevent eh candle from an uneven burn and side tunnel.
You can opt for a premade candle topper ring that sits on the top of the jar. This will help hold heat along the sides while still allowing the candle to burn. Personally, though I have found these are only effective when the wax is high in the jar.
What I find is most effective is creating a ring with foil and wrap it around the jar like a sleeve. This will hold heat to the jar and effectively melt the stubborn wax. Alternately, I have used two part mason lids with the center removed. Be sure to use a lid that will slip over the outer part of the jar and tip it so the ring is slanted down where the wax needs melting. - Help! I can’t smell my aromatherapy candle!
There are a few things you can do here. First, know that candles made with essential oils simply do not throw scent like fragrance oils. This is partly due to the fact that essential oil candles lack benzyl benzoate, a common ingredient in perfumes, room sprays and fragrance plug-ins. While it helps the scent last longer and evaporate slower, it can cause irritation to lungs and skin, among other things. Second essential oils can dissipate quickly when heat is applied.
To help retain the scent longer, be sure to place the lid back onto the candle when it is not being used.
But what if there is little to no scent when burning?
First, try moving the candle closer to you. Also be sure the size of the candle is not too small for the room you are burning it in. Burning a 2 oz candle in a large living room isn’t going to throw much scent no matter what you do.
If there is simply no scent or it is very faint and the candle is an appropriate size, you may add a few drops of pure essential oil to the pooled wax. This will freshen and strengthen the scent.
Please note that not all essential oils and are candle friendly. Although lemongrass is a very refreshing scent, it will generally not smell like lemongrass, but rather leave a fresh feel to the air. - My wick will not stay lit
In this case, the wick is too short for the candle or is clogged with fragrance and or wax. You can insert a new wick into the wax using a wick appropriate to the jar size by pushing a metal skewer to the bottom and slipping it in. Be sure to cut the wick to 1/4 inch above the wax.
Alternately, you can use a candle warmer to use the candle without the wick. - My candle flame is hopping, jumping or dancing
Candle flame jump can occur for several reasons. The first thing to check for is air drafts. If the candle is near a fan or open window, the flame may jump. This can also occur because the candle is not burning properly and is due to incorrect wick size, a clogged wick, or uneven combustion.
To help prevent issues with candles, always keep wick trimmed to 1/4 inch and extinguish with a candle snuffer. Also, do not brun longer than 4 hours as this can encourage carbon buildup and cause wick mushrooming.
